The BIG Question

"Yesterday, December 7, 1941— a date which will live in infamy— the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by the naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan." The day Roosevelt gave this speech to congress, the US had now joined the Second World War. A war that would take a great toll on the US and its allies. This would be his third term in office and his second global crisis, leading the US- first being the Great Depression.

I used two main sources for my research, being Encyclopedia Britannica and The White House website. Britannica was a great source for FDR's early life and accomplishments during his presidency. It showed pictures of him during his time in the New York Senate and his career before presidency. He led a democratic insurgent and became assistant secretary for the US navy. While the White House website gave an overview of his side accomplishments and hardships like contracting poliomyelitis at age 39. The language was easy to understand as it was similar to other articles and language I've read and it was easy to adapt. I've shown the contributions FDR made to society well through my proposal and visible thinking routine.

A significant event on Roosevelt's live was that he was diagnosed with poliomyelitis in August 1921, during a visit to Campobello Island. After a day of exhausting exercise, Roosevelt experienced symptoms like fever, ascending paralysis, numbness, hypersensitivity of the skin, prolonged bladder and bowel dysfunction and facial paralysis. He faced many life-threatening medical problems including respiratory failure and clots in leg veins and came close to death. FDR was permanently paralyzed from the waist down and founded a rehabilitation center in Warm Springs, Georgia, in 1926. Even with his illness, Roosevelt avoided being seen in public in his wheelchair, but the American population knew of his illness and it became a major part in his portrayal. And in 1938, the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis was founded by Roosevelt, which led to the development of polio vaccines.

Roosevelts notable achievements to be brief are healing the US economy during the Great Depression and leading the Allies to a victory during the majority of World War 2. He established many administrations and extended the federal government's power to help combat the Great Depression. Introduced the Hundred Days as a policy of his New Deal which utilized an array of measures to heal and reform the economy slowly but surely. He admitted it was a process of trial and error- but it did the job, any opportunity for jobs to be made, were taken and no chance was abandoned. Jobs including ones that improved Infrastructure around cities and higher wages were given with the New Deal policy. FDR also believed that he himself had collapsed some aspects of the economy and was dead set on bring it back up to speed. FDR would've undergone tons upon tons of stress during this global crisis, his people struggled and he delivered; definitely hard work. And even any effect of the Great Depression was quickly eradicated upon the wartime production of Second World War.

World War 2 was one of the most bloodiest conflicts in the history of man, America alone having over 416,000 casualties. Before being drawn into the conflict, Churchill convinced Roosevelt to supply Great Britain with food and raw materials via the Atlantic Ocean, he also gave Britain more than 50 destroyers as escorts for the supply convoys Roosevelt also supplied the Soviet Union with arms, and fighting vehicles like tanks and aircraft. Roosevelt also provided diplomatic support for China after Japan's mass expansion over eastern Asia. This was known as the lend-lease program. But after the attack on Pearl Harbour, Roosevelt could finally join the war against Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan. Roosevelt, seeking vengeance for the loss of life at Pearl Harbour and his advisors devised a plan to bomb Tokyo with American medium bombers. And on 18 April 1942, the American carrier USS Hornet, launched 16 B-25 medium bombers about 1200 kilometers from the Japanese coast and 310 km further away from the intended take off point. This act of bravery motivated the men of the US Navy and gave them a baptism through fire. He took the lead in establishing a great alliance with all countries fighting against the Axis Powers and meeting with Churchill in many wartime conferences. Invasions of North Africa and Sicily and Italy took place in 1942 to 1943 with preparations for an Invasion of France in 1944. And on D-Day, on June 6, Canadian, British and American troops landed on the beaches of Normandy with US paratroopers landing in German occupied France to weaken defenses. Roosevelts actions led to a victory on both the European and Pacific theatres, but he wouldn’t live to see them. He worked hard for a victory and got one, ending one of the deadliest conflicts of the 20th century.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States of America, he served 4 terms on office but died of a cerebral hemorrhage in his fourth term on 12 April 1945. He was known for his three traits of optimism, perseverance and leadership. Showing his skills thoroughly throughout the Great Depression, with motivational chats via radio and the perseverance through the New Deal policy. The policy essentially reshaped America's economy to suit its needs. FDR led a crippled nation through one of the most tough times in the 20th century, and with the wartime struggle of the Second World War, Roosevelt would've been pushed to his limits through diplomatic and military support to the US and its allies.

Roosevelt's actions inspired me too always push through whatever hardships you encounter as he suffered polio for more than 20 years and still managed to push on. Even with polio, he did good in the medical world by founding a rehabilitation center in Warm Springs, Georgia and the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis which helped in the development of polio vaccines. This aspiration makes me want to do good in the future, like help my friends out through tough situations.

In conclusion, Franklin D. Roosevelt was one of the greatest and most notable presidents in US history. He revived a deteriorating economy and led a group of nations to a victory in one of the most bloodiest conflicts ever. In turn, a born leader, a great optimist and a rigorous perseverant. He worked around things and always looked to the bright side as motivation.
